Worst or Best Gig Ever?

One of the worst gigs one of my old bands ever played was at a blues club in Atlanta, Lou’s Blues Review, sometime in mid ‘90s. There were literally five people in the audience (one was my mom, another our drummer’s wife), and we had technical difficulties throughout the evening that kept causing sound to go in and out while playing (we never did figure out for sure what was causing it, but we kept troubleshooting batteries, cables, you name it).

What we did not realize, however, was that one of those five people in the audience was a promoter for Atlanta’s 96rock radio station. I guess he was so impressed at how dedicated we were playing to five people despite all our difficulties, that he booked us a few weeks later as the main band for a Miss Killian’s Red event at the $3 Cafe in Buckhead (ATL), where we played on a big stage to about 500 people.

The moral of the story: always give it everything you’ve got.
